2009-2013
When Jem was fourteen, her older brother killed himself. He didn't leave a note, and it crushed her beyond belief. Months later, the dead rose out of their graves and started consuming the brains of the living. Prior to this, Jem had been an awkward child: Kieren describes her at 11 as wanting to be invisible so badly that she walked on her tiptoes for months. The resulting medication and therapy never revealed why, but Kieren knew. Jem thought she was strange, somehow. Not normal. She only came out of her shell after Kieren made her a heavy metal mix cd. Kieren was the centre of Jem's universe growing up and losing him sent her world spiralling. At fourteen, after the dead had rose and people were dropping left and right, she joined the HVF and learned how to shoot. For four years she trained and honed her skills as a soldier, earning the nickname the 'Rambo of Roarton'.2013
At 18, Jem lost her best friend Lisa while on a supply run. She came to save her and found her being eaten by two zombies: Amy Dyer, and her own brother. Unable to shoot him, Jem ran and told people she ran out of bullets. Shortly before she turned 18, Kieren returned to Roarton as a medicated PDS Sufferer, throwing her life into chaos. She struggled to accept and forgive him, and found herself struggling with the new knowledge that every undead person she killed may have been someone she could have saved. By the end of S1, Jem and Kieren had reached a slow reconcile.2014 - pre shooting Henry
Jem, no longer a member of the HVF, returns to school at 19 to finish her GSCE's. She struggles to fit in with the younger kids around her, but is desperate for friends. She and Kieren have reconciled, but they're definitely not as close as they used to be. Kieren's preparing to leave for Europe, and Jem's going to be stuck on her own. Again. She is routinely plagued by nightmares and shame, but finds herself reluctantly boasting about her time in the HVF when the girls at school seem impressed. When it turns out that she killed one of the girls' father, she crumbles and ends up back in the company of fellow HVF member Gary, ultimately ending up in a relationship with him - which brings out the worst in her.2014 - post shooting Henry
Jem is somewhat reluctantly pulled back into patrolling when town hysteria over PDS sufferers starts rising. While patrolling in the woods with Gary, Jem has a traumatic episode and shoots blindly, killing Henry Lonsdale. Gary covers it up and gets rid of the body, while Jem tries to do the right thing - only for the authority in charge to sweep it away too. The guilt plagues her for the rest of the season and she routinely hallucinates Henry. Initially this pulls her closer to Gary, but when Gary drugs her brother into becoming rabid (to try and create a wedge in their relationship) and her brothers best friend is murdered Jem realises she needs to make a choice, and she chooses Kieren. By the end of the season, Jem admits that she needs help for her mental health and that she's killed Henry (to Kieren only.)2015 - 2017; Eudio
Post-canon, Jem goes to Eudio. She meets and falls in love with a demon named Petre, makes important progress in her mental health through the power of friendship and cuddles. Makes a bunch of progress at socialising with peers her age, learns how to be a normal person. Regresses a little when she finds out Petre isn't just a demon, but a demon who kills and eats people and decides okay, sure, that's fine if the people are objectively terrible. Eventually chooses to leave Eudio for the hell that is Petre's canon world to live unhappily ever after.
