Jem has a quick temper born from years of pent up resentment regarding her brothers death, the subsequent grief that went with it and then the trauma of having to learn how to fight at a young age. While she's working on it, generally she finds it tough to reign in her temper if put on the spot and often defaults to sarcasm before she'll do anything else when dealing with strangers or she feels threatened. A lot of the time she might even close herself and avoid saying anything in order to put off a confrontation, especially if she knows that she is in the wrong.

She overcompensates a lot for her own trauma. She is frequently plagued by nightmares and hallucinations, and is slow to talk about her problems. Jem often gravitates towards people and things that are not always good for her especially if she receives positive attention. A lot of Jem's previous self-worth came from her proficiency as a soldier and now that she no longer has that (or wants that), she is looking for new ways to obtain it. For a while she got it by being Gary Kendall's second in command-slash-girlfriend, and now she no longer has that. As of the end of season 2, she's trying to find self-worth in being a more honest, decent person -- which is hard, since she has almost six years worth of prejudice towards monsters to shed.

Despite this, she's still kind. She would never turn her back on someone in need, or not listen to someone who needs an ear. She makes herself available for people with problems and shows a subtle vulnerability for people with similar issues as her own, even if she is somewhat defensive about it at first.
Appearance
Comes in at a modest 5"3, with dark hair and blue eyes. Jem is small and looks scrawny, but she has decent upper and lower body strength from her time in the HVF. She has numerous callouses on her fingers and palms from gun training and scrapes. Often her nail polish is chipped, and more often she has dark circles from poor sleep. Jem is pretty, but she has to be pushed into taking care of herself.

In Post-Eudio and PSLs, Jem's aged well into her mid to late twenties.

EUDIO DEVELOPMENT
2015 - 2017 [ cuddlr, inbox, logs & network ]
Jem's initial wish on her first time in Eudio was to 'get better'; a vague enough request following some of her final dialogue in In The Flesh. For most of her tenure, Jem regularly saw a therapist 'off-screen' and worked on developing friendships and relationships within her own agegroup. She made the most of opportunities robbed from her due to the situation at home, including dating, having roomies and even living on her own for a bit. A lot of her final development came from meeting others from similar worlds as her own, and then spending time and making peace with her brother.

Her most significant relationship is the one she chose to pursue after Eudio, leaving with Petre to put her past behind her. Whether this was the right decision was left in the open, as Jem still had unresolved issues at home which she ran from, and Petre signified the kind of type she had gravitated to in the past. IE a bad influence.

History
⦿ Jem doesn't have a canonical birthday, but the dates around when she says she's "nearly 19" and "almost 20" suggest an April/March birthday. So, 29/03/1995. As a child, Jem saw several child psychologists as her parents became concerned over why she constantly tip-toed every time she walked. Kieren states that no one could figure out why, and that even after Jem got special clogs to help walk more quietly, only Kieren really knew why. Jem wanted to be invisible as a child; she felt like she was odd and didn't belong, and desperately didn't want to be seen or heard. To help her overcome it, Kieren made her a heavy metal mixtape to help become loud, to show her it was okay to be heard.

⦿ Kieren died by suicide when Jem was 14. They were incredibly close, and he did not leave her a note, or even explain why. He was gone for close to three days before Jem quietly told her father where Kieren might be, only for him to return with Kieren's body. For a short time, before the rising, Jem lived with the guilt of knowing she might have saved his live, and the anger over him leaving with no word, no indication. A month later, the dead rose and started attacking the living.

⦿ At fourteen, Jem joined the Human Volunteer Force, which was primarily populated by people Kieren did not get on with while he was alive. Most of these people were actively hostile to Kieren in school, while others did not like him for his open sexuality. Bill Macy is a notable figure - despite having hated Kieren for 'leading his son astray', he took Jem under his wing to make her into a proper soldier.

⦿ In the HVF, Jem lost countless friends. It's assumed a lot of these were killed needlessly in the early days, as misinformation regarding zombie bites being infectious was rife.

⦿ Jem is absolutely devoted to her brother, no questions asked. The hostility she shows him in season one is born out of hurt and grief; a sense of betrayal over him leaving her and also not leaving any explanation. She forgives him. In season two, their brief drift is over being led astray while she manages her guilt over committing a serious and traumatising crime. They reconcile fairly fast. It's worth noting that Jem has been forced into the position of having to choose whether to shoot her rabid brother twice and both times was unable to do it.

⦿ Jem shoots and kills her classmate, Henry Lonsadale, while having a traumatic episode in the woods. She shoots more or less blindly, guided by sound and vague shadows. The murder is covered up by Gary, who encourages her not to tell anyone. When she does tell an authority figure -- Maxine Martin, MP -- she is again told to tell no one else. The body is disposed of and Jem has to shoulder the guilt on her own before she finally confesses to Kieren. It's worth noting that Jem is an exceptional shot, even when blindly panicked in the dark - she gets Henry in the forehead, almost dead centre.

⦿ Jem befriends Charlotte, a younger classmate, while finally completing her GCSE'S. After it turns out Jem shot Charlotte's dad early on during the rising, Charlotte gets revenge by encouraging Jem into a deeply traumatic and out of the blue opportunistic situation, humiliating her in front of her younger classmates.

⦿ Jem makes a move on Gary, who is at least six years older than her. He does not push her away and pursues a short lived relationship with her. Ultimately his own trauma and severe prejudice lead him to assaulting and drugging Jem's brother and then setting him loose on the villagers -- he tries to trick Jem into taking him out.

⦿ Jem expresses to Kieren that she needs help dealing with her PTSD.
