[He knows it was a joke, the whole statement, but he still wants to say that. In case it was nudging close to what she feared was the truth, and the joke was a way of checking.]
I got a lot here too. More than I expected to get when I left my world. [He breathes slowly in, then out, like he's really processing that thought.] A lot more.
[He's not saying he's happy, though, not in so many words.]

No, [she says at last. ] People are gonna leave here eventually. Imagine what that'd be like? Staying and everyone you care about leaving? [She heaves a sigh. ] Roarton's - a nightmare, except you can't wake up from it. And this is like a long dream that I'm gonna have to wake up from eventually.

Why stay there? It's not too much to ask they set you and Kieren up somewhere else. Not a whole other world, you can still talk to your family, but - out of that town. The way you talk about it...

He's not from the same bit of time as me. I'm - from just after his friends funeral. He decided to stay in Roarton; that it needed someone trying to change it.

[He doesn't exactly know much about the position from experience, how a good or good one shouldn't be, but Jem's his model in that absence of knowledge. Quite firmly placed.
With a little sigh, he settles back against the headboard, letting his eyes slip shut.]
